What is Ohm's Law?

Ohm's Law is a fundamental principle in electronics that describes the relationship between voltage (V), current (I), and resistance (R). This calculator uses the most common form, V = I × R, to find the voltage across a component when you know the current flowing through it and its resistance.

Calculating Electrical Power

The Electrical Power formula calculates the rate at which electrical energy is transferred in a circuit, measured in watts (W). By knowing the voltage (V) and the current (I), you can determine how much power a device consumes or a circuit delivers. This is essential for sizing components and understanding energy usage.

Series and Parallel Resistance

When multiple resistors are in a circuit, their total resistance changes based on how they are connected.
Series: Resistors are connected end-to-end. The total resistance is simply the sum of all individual resistances.
Parallel: Resistors are connected across the same two points. The total resistance is less than any single resistor and is calculated using the reciprocal formula. These calculators quickly find the total resistance for both configurations.

What is Voltage Drop?

Voltage drop is the loss of electrical pressure (voltage) that occurs as electricity travels along a wire. Every wire has some resistance, and this calculator uses a simplified version of Ohm's Law (Vd = I × R) to find how much voltage is lost over a specific length of wire. This is critical for ensuring that devices at the end of a long cable receive enough power to operate correctly.
