Understanding the Civil & Construction Calculators

How to Calculate Concrete Volume

Whether you're pouring a rectangular slab for a patio or a cylindrical column for a footing, knowing the precise volume of concrete needed is crucial to avoid waste and extra cost. Concrete is sold by volume, typically in cubic yards (yd³). These calculators take your measurements in feet and inches and provide an accurate volume calculation in cubic yards, ensuring you order the right amount for your project.

Calculating Asphalt Tonnage

Asphalt for paving driveways or paths is sold by weight (tons), not volume. This calculator helps you determine the total tonnage required for your project. By inputting the length, width, and thickness of the area you need to pave, along with the density of the asphalt mix (typically around 145 lbs/ft³), you can get a precise estimate for your material order.

What is Soil Compaction?

Soil compaction is a critical measure in construction that indicates how densely soil is packed. Proper compaction is essential for creating a stable foundation for buildings, roads, and embankments, as it prevents the ground from settling over time. This calculator determines the compaction percentage by comparing the "Field Dry Density" (the density of the soil on-site) to the "Max Proctor Density" (the maximum possible density for that soil type, determined in a lab). A compaction percentage of 95% or higher is often required for stable construction.
